Making It So
[Posted Saturday, October 31, 2026 10/31/26 11:29 am]

It's been a truly devastating week for Star Trek fans with the sad news that Star Trek legends, Sir Patrick Stewart and Walter Koenig have passed away.

The Star Trek world was shocked by the news that Walter Koenig died at the age of 90 on October 25. He was one of the last remaining of the original Star Trek actors, which just leaves William Shatner and George Takei still with us. But then everyone was emotionally shattered with the announcement this week from Patrick Stewart's family that he passed away on October 28 at age 86 after a brief battle with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy body dementia.

Walter Koenig and Patrick Stewart

Both men contributed heavily to Star Trek and sci-fi thanks to their iconic performances. In Star Trek, Koenig portrayed the young Starfleet ensign Pavel Chekov who was the Enterprise's navigator, and quickly gained a big fan following. Meanwhile, Stewart elevated the world of Star Trek with his majestic performance as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, bringing his classical theater training to the role of the Captain of the Enterprise.

Both actors made significant contributions to other popular sci-fi franchises as well. Koenig's best known non-Trek role was as the authoritative psi-cop, Alfred Bester, in the space opera Babylon 5. And Stewart appeared as Charles Xavier/Professor X in the Marvel X-Men films. He reprises the role in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, his final on-screen performance.

I personally had the pleasure to meet Walter at a small Star Trek Convention in Washington, DC in the late 70's, he was very friendly and great with the fans.

Koenig and Stewart left their mark and their work will always continue to delight and inspire many fans long after they are gone. It is a legacy to be proud of as the two men take their place among the stars.
